What is Garden State Gothic?

A research, criticism, folklore, and cultural-history project exploring New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic as a distinct American Gothic tradition.

MISSION: Garden State Gothic (GSG) investigates the Gothic history of New Jersey and the greater Mid-Atlantic. The project argues that New Jersey possesses its own recognizable Gothic tradition, produced by:

  • Colonial history

  • Indigenous history and appropriation

  • Forests and wetlands

  • Folklore

  • Religious anxiety

  • Industrialization

GSG will document, analyze, and define tradition through accessible cultural criticism grounded in historical and literary research. The long-term goal is to establish GSG as a framework for understanding the Gothic tradition of New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic.
